A monotype is a single print of an image that has been transferred from a plate of metal, glass, or another material onto different types of paper and an assortment of mediums can be used. This printmaking method was used by such famous artist as Rembrandt, Gauguin, and Degas.
A monoprint refers to monotype work that also includes elements of another printmaking process such as etching, woodcut, silkscreen and so on.

The process by which I arrive at a finished Monotype:
Materials are: Hot metal plate, colored wax, a piece of mat
board, wooden stick or some tool that can manipulate the wax on the hot metal
plate to form a design. The kind of paper used can make a big difference in
what the final product looks like. A top grade linen paper gives an interesting
look to scenes with water, etc. Onion skin or oriental papers can give a softer
more oriental look. It is fun to experiment with different kinds of materials.
Another thing to remember is the way you pull your print off the plate makes all the difference in the final result. Practice is necessary. I hope someone tries this and reports back on how much fun they had.
